A Guide To Inspecting Your Home’s Exteriors For Damage

Your home goes through an awful lot in the span of its life. Most of it is down to the volatile nature of the weather and temperature. Truth be told, our homes just aren’t well equipped to deal with the ever-changing elements around it. Worse still, you may not even know there’s a problem until it’s too late. As luck would have it, though, there are some essential checks you can perform to nip any potential issues in the bud. Before they devolve into chaos.

You’re going to need to survey your entire property from the ground up. All elements of your home’s exterior are susceptive to bad weather. The effects of the wind, rain, and even the sun all pose their own unique set of problems, so the time of year can play a significant part. Start from the top down, and let’s take a look at your roof. There are a couple of surefire ways to spot any potential pitfalls. If you see any cracks forming in your tiles, it’s time to get a roofing company on the phone. It’s a good idea to head up to your loft for a close inspection. Look out for signs of light peeking through your tiles.

While you’re in that area, it’s advisable to take a look at your pipes, drains, and gutters, too. We don’t put a lot of stock into them, but they can have massive consequences if left neglected. If cracks are appearing around the bolts in your guttering, then you need to get it fixed as a matter of urgency. Truth be told, the problem will escalate with time and then you’ll be found wanting. Not to mention the price hike for a much more expansive repair job. Better to get it out of the way nice and early, before it has the chance to unfold further.

When it comes to your walls, it can be harder to spot any problems if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. The very nature of authentic bricks and stone means that they’re often imperfect by design. Pay close attention to the cement, as it can develop holes if not treated properly. They may seem insignificant, but they can actually result in damp emerging throughout your home. And as we know, moisture is extremely hard to eradicate and lowers the value of your house.

Next up, let’s see if anything is crawling out of the woodwork. Literally and figuratively. Some places that you need to check out is your fences, windows, and doors. All of which should be your utmost priority. Rotten wood is a nightmare to deal with, and the problem will only get worse if left alone. You also want to take a look at your paintwork and pay close attention to it. Not only is it decorative, but it forms a protective layer over your wood to protect it from rot. It may need a new coat. Be aware that your windows can develop stress cracks in extreme temperatures. They’ll need replacing in instances such as this.
