Are you thinking about ways to spruce up your backyard and make it a more inviting outdoor environment for your family and friends? Here are some easy and inexpensive ways to breathe some new life into your tired backyard.

1. Create a conversation area.
You can use your existing patio furniture, or buy new furniture if your budget allows, to set up an outdoor living area where you and your friends can relax and enjoy the nature. It could either be on your patio or deck, or you could create a new area in the yard. Throw in a fire-pit for those chilly evenings, and you’d have a cozy little spot to entertain your friends.

2. Add some color to your yard.
It works the same way outside as it does indoors. Here a few ideas to toss in a little color.

  • New patio furniture cushions: You could choose a bold, trendy color, or mix some patterns and colors.
  • Patio umbrella: Coordinate it with the furniture to tie it all together.
  • Rugs: Not only will small throw-rugs in your patio area look great, they will also help to keep the dirt outside where it belongs.
  • Flowers: You can pick your favorite blooms and spread them all around your patio area, conversation pit, and other areas in your yard. Maybe choose different varieties that bloom at various times of the year so you’ll always have that added color burst in your yard.
  • Paint: Fences, sheds, and even some of the trim-work on your home could be spruced up with a fresh coat of paint to make your yard look more inviting.
  1. Lights
You could think about adding some string lightsaround your deck, along any fencing, or maybe even decorating trees or other foliage in your backyard. The soft glow just creates its own atmosphere of festivity, adding a sense of fun to whatever is going on.

    4. Plant a garden.
Section off an area of your backyard with some decorative, easy-to-install fencing, and start a garden. If you’ve never had your own garden, you could start with a small area until you get the knack of it down. And, maybe over time, you could make it into a larger area. Grow whatever you want. Not only is it a great hobby, but you could have fresh flowers to decorate outside with, fresh vegetables for your family, or even some tasty herbs for cooking. Gardens also make great conversation pieces when people are around them. They’re usually either curious about growing gardens or will have plenty of advice for you on how to take care of them.

    5. Think about a hammock.
There’s not much that’s more relaxing than lazing in a shaded hammock in the backyard on a calm, summer day. You could even have a couple of hammocks. Not only are they a great place for a nap or a romantic cuddle, they’re just plain fun.

    6. How does your deck look?
How does the wood look? Is it stained or faded? Are some of the pieces broken? All it takes is a little time and a minimal amount of money to make your deck look great again. You could even use a little ingenuity and build in some new seating and conversation areas. Then, put a fresh coat of stain on it and everything looks like its brand new.

    7. How about a little art?
There are all kinds of adornments that you can get to decorate your landscaping. Add some small concrete statues to flower beds to spruce them up. Maybe a wooden windmill in the center of your yard. How about some trellises for vines? Take a look around at your local hardware store or online. You may be surprised at how many different options there are out there to add some appeal to your outside living area.

    8. Try a new theme.
Think of it as redecorating your yard. Maybe you are thinking about a different style of patio furniture. You could change the entire color scheme. Or, you could have a theme going on with a lot of nautical things, or roses everywhere, or even your favorite cartoon character. You can express yourself outdoors just like you do with your interior decorating. The possibilities are endless.

These are only a few of the ways that you can make your backyard a more fun place to be. Now that we’ve got your imagination in full-gear, have fun with it. You’ll enjoy making your yard look better just as much as you’ll enjoy the reaction it gets from your family and friends.
